Not much of a difference, right? Well, maybe but not as extreme as Daniel. Some crazy shit.

My beard is now a stow away aboard a tanker headed to China. There he will be sold on the black market for a premium rate. When I get the money I will then be able to afford that surgery I've needed for so long. You know the one. With that thing. That makes me different.

Oh, and happy father's day to all the dads out there. Rock on.

i'm a brand new man.

not to get sentimental, but being in this contest was more than just a celebration of beards and masculinity. i feel like it was a great example of a community gathering around something as silly as facial hair and bonding and getting behind each other. this contest has given me new respect for myself and new people who i now call friends.

so thanks to everyone that took part in what we were doing, everyone that talked trash about my crummy pictures and most importantly two other guys who put their noggins on the line for raw, unbridled competition.

You know you can learn allot from these two bearded men.

Saddam, he gets a bad rap but I kinda like him, he's the underdog. How can you not like the underdog? I see him up there in court causing a ruckus, he's surrounded by like 200 million people that hate him, he's in an unfamiliar land but he keeps on keeping on and I like that. He's like a modern day Charlton Heston in Planet of the Apes, he's an inspiration to all of us to keep up the good fight and never surrender.

But....

Then you got Kenny.
I don't think I have to explain why you should like good old Kenny, but unlike Saddam Kenny is a realist. Now I could try to sum up Kennys philosophy on life but I think he said it best...

Kinda a boring photo. For that, I apologize. But don't my glass blocks look pretty?

Especially juxaposed with the symbolism of masculinity. The sallow, forlornly look of the protagonist portrays the emotional connection that he is seeking from the viewer. Also, the contrasting political and Hollywood figures reveal a sense of detachment from reality that one feels in our modern culture.

These rules have not been edited since 3/30/06 and each of us had the opportunity to make any changes we deemed necessary.
Daniel used a magazine once before and there was some confusion over whether or not that counted, as a result the above rules were created.

This weekend was spent getting back to nature... and to, um, manliness? I was invited to my friend Tim's annual "Man Weekend". It went something like this (in order of volume):
1. drink lots of beer (and whisky)
2. sit around a campfire
3. eat lots of meat (I did not partake in this but the other guys ate enough to count for me)
4. shoot airsoftÃÂ® guns at each other (basically BB guns that shoot plastic instead of metal BBs but still sting pretty good)
5. look at saturn through a massive telescope
6. ride the zip line
7. sleep

It was all very fun and no one cried.

next is my friend keith from atlanta. he's working on a tremendous beard that harkens back to days of swedish death metal. good luck keith, we're all counting on you.

finally, there's my dad, phil bellury. he's had a beard for most of my life and is an inspiration to beard growers young and old alike. he's perfected the art of the scraggly beard and what he lacks in volume he makes up for with style. way to go dad, you're the reason i wanted a beard in the first place.

Cooper said to me "Matt can I be in your beard photo?" I said "Well, Cooper, that could be dangerous, I'd have to hold you as well as the newspaper and that is tricky." "Please! It will be fine." I thought it over for a few moments and then I gave it. "Ok, Coop but you have to hang on." That was when it all went wrong. Cooper, perched in the nook of my elbow, began to slip. "Hang on." I said. "I'm slipping, Matt, help me!" There was nothing I could do. In a flash it was all over. All I could hope was that the photos came out. Luckily for me they did. Cooper, however did not have such luck. And will be recovering at the Grand Street Animal Clinic for several weeks. Get well soon buddy.

There are few things of note to point out in this photo.

1. No special effects were used in this photo.
2. My eyes are not red because of the camera flash. They really get red like that when I summon The Black Dragon (my sensai says I need to be careful how often I summon him, but I thought this was worth it).
3. Aside from years of dedicated training, summoning The Black Dragon can only be done by a bearded man.
4. Summoning The Black Dragon also involves punching through a New York Post with the word "Nailed" on the cover. This makes it all the more rare.

(Don't worry, The Black Dragon is completely harmless and it's sole purpose is to fly around the world, watching as many syndicated reruns of Blossom. Don't ask me why.)

While walking to the subway last night I passed by a little bar on Sullivan street called the V-Bar. There were a couple of guys outside who noticed me and started yelling out "Yo beard boy come here son." "Whoa! are you even serious right now? The Mullet Clause

i'd like to make a motion that will hence forth be known as the 6-month mullet clause. for this clause to pass i require all 3 members of the beard competition to be in agreement. we all know that mullets suck. it's a known fact. i hate them, and now i'm beginning to have one. what i propose is that each member gets a supervised de-mulleting to be performed by or in the presence of the other two members. this operation can only happen once every six (6) months. if you choose to use the 6-month mullet clause you cannot use it again for at least 6 months.

i recommend this motion because the beard contest is about having fun and growing beards. not looking like a hillbilly who's hot for his sister.

BEARDS BOYS NIGHT ON THE TOWN

These Photos have been making the rounds on Gawker, Gothamist, and other NYC related blogs. Apparently the "Beard boys" have been making themselves men about town recently, late nights, partying, and full on friday follicle fraternizing. The timeline for last night seems a little hazy, but here's what we heard so far. The night starts early with James showing up at a trendy little bar on Sullivan Street known as Vbar. A few hours later, Matt shows up and the two beards begin to drink heavily. Matt keeps ducking outside to "place phone calls" but who knows, maybe he is calling his personal trainer. There are a few words exchanged between the two around 9:45 PM and eventually Matt leaves the bar with an unnamed and practically unbearded man who we think was referred to as Doctor D. James continues to slug back brew after brew, a foamy white head lacing the outer crown of his (as he puts it) "Glorious beard". Around 12:30 AM, James the diehard is still bearded, standing, and drinking. Matt returns with "Doctor D." and the drinking continues on until the trio is rounded out by Daniel, who heavily bearded is also heavily bundled beneath his $10,000 dollar burgundy jacket (allegedly a sponsorship item from Bloomingdales). Matt disappears into the bathroom one last time, (we think) so that he may, let's just say it, vomit, but that doesn't stop the party. The three men continue to drink until the wee hours of the morning, their beards seeming to grow a little as the sun begins to crawl out of the darkness and into the sky.

sometimes the dead just don't stay dead. people who've seen the evil dead trilogy or played resident evil 4 (going on at bellury's house every monday and thursday nights), know this for a fact. from the looks of this picture (white eyes, changed tee-shirt, new newspaper), the dead body of daniel bellury is in the begining stages of re-animation. protect your children. you all could be in danger.

Daniel Bellury: He Will Be Missed

Friends,

It is a sad day when we say goodbye to a good solider, a strong man of honor and most importantly a man with a big beard. Daniel Bellury, our friend committed suicide early Thursday morning. In a note found near his body, he asked that the above picture would be posted to this blog.

Here's the story from CNN:

"Thursday, Feb 16th - New York: Daniel Bellury, bass player for world-renown music group 'The Station Myth', commited suicide in his manhattan home. In a note found near his body, he mentioned not being able to handle the pressure in his life. Apparently the music group and excessive attention from the female fans weren't what drove him to kill himself, it was a group of bloggers in a competition to grow beards that drover Mr. Bellury to kill himself. In the note he remarked that he couldn't take the pressure, in particular was a line "if they want a f*cking newspaper, I'll give them a f*cking newspaper." Mr. Bellury's bloody wrists were cut and left to bleed on an issue of the New York Daily News, which Mr. Bellury remaked in his note, "did cost 50 cents". Mr. Bellury's family has not made a statement at this time."

I have a Couple of things to say.
1. If you look at that front page you can see we are being imitated across the east coast, this thing has spread faster then I think we ever could have imagined, I'm scared and I think we should shut it down before facial hair becomes cool on women.
2. This is my second picture in a row guys...IN A ROW! Let get with the program.
3. I am aware I look like a dick in this picture.
4. Don't you theoretically lose if you don't post a picture once a week in this contest? And doesn't that picture have to have a newspaper in it?
6. How about you fuckers come down to v-bar tonight and we can confirm some of these rules.
